POEM at a Glance

Childhood of the Prince : The Prince, Siddhartha lived in the palace in an atmosphere of peace and love. All the pleasures and luxuries of life were provided to him. He had no clear knowledge of pains, diseases, old age and death. Sometimes he awoke from his sleep and cried, “I shall come….”. At this, his wife became sad and worried. Then he ordered to let the Veena be sounded to please her.

Message of Veena : One day Veena sounded. The devas were playing on it. They were saying to him, “There are pains in the whole world. Nowhere there is joy. You have taken birth to save the man and to relieve him of his miseries. So you should see their pains and should try to bring deliverance for them.” After sometime Chitra, a maid servant, was singing an ancient tale of love in a wonderful land. Hearing it the Prince was reminded of the message of Veena.

First Visit of the Prince to the City: The Prince desired to go to the city and ordered his “ charioteer, Channa to make the chariot ready. When the king knew it, he ordered that the city should be decorated much. No painful or ugly sight should come on the way of the Prince. So the old men, sick people and handicapped, all were restricted to come out.

At various places a warm welcome was given to the Prince. The city was so much decorated that it looked like a city of magic. When the Prince passed through a gate, he saw a very weak and old man begging. The people were pushing him out of the road. But the Prince stopped them and asked Channa about him. Channa told him, “He is an eighty years old man. Long age has made him so.” The Prince asked, “Does the old age come to everybody ?” Channa replied, “It happens with all.” The Prince was very sad. He at once ordered to go back home. He had seen more sufferings than he hoped. So the Prince came back home. He was so sad that he remained restless the whole night. He remained thinking how love should be defended from time.

The Dream of Shuddhodana : That night the king saw a fearful dream in which he saw seven visions. By the first vision the king saw a beautiful flag which was torn and thrown down into the dust by a strong wind. By the second vision, he saw ten huge elephants. The earth moved when they walked. The Prince was sitting on the leading elephant. By the third vision, he saw Prince sitting in a chariot which was drawn by four fearful horses. By the fourth vision, he saw a moving wheel made of jewels. By the fifth vision, he saw the Prince beating a drum. By the sixth vision, he saw a tower reaching the clouds. The Prince was standing on it and was scattering jewels. The people were collecting them. By the last vision, he saw six men weeping and lamenting.

The Meaning of the Dream : With a great difficulty an old man came and told him the meaning of the seven visions seen by the king. The first vision meant that new faiths would take place of the old ones. Ten elephants were the ten gifts of wisdom by which the Prince would shake the world. Four horses were the four virtues, with the help of which the Prince would get knowledge. The wheel was the wheel of perfect law by which the Prince would save the humanity from sorrow. The stormy sound of the drum meant that the Prince would teach his principles in a loud voice. The tower meant that his principles would grow like the tower. The sixth vision meant that the Prince would scatter the treasure of the perfect law and people would accept them. Lastly there were six men whom the Prince would give knowledge. Then the old man told the king that it all would happen in seven days. Then he went away.

The Second Visit of the Prince to the City : The Prince wanted to see the life as it was. He wanted that the people should not recognise him when he would go to the city. The king also thought that the condition might improve if he allowed him to go to the city again. So, he allowed him. The Prince entered the city as a merchant and Channa as his accountant. So nobody could recognise them.

In the city the Prince saw a sick man moaning and crying for help. He put his head on his knees and solaced him. Then he asked Channa about him. Channa said, “This man has been suffering from any fearful disease. The disease has deserted him of his strength. In the last he will die. Then this disease will attack any other man. So please leave him lest the disease should attack you.” Channa further told the Prince that the disease comes all of a sudden. All pains end.into death. Then the Prince said that this life is full of fears. There is no hope of joy and health.

After this the Prince saw some people carrying a dead body. They were saying, Ram, Ram, O Ram….” They put it on a heap of wood and burnt it to ashes. When the Prince asked Channa about it, he told that all must die one day. The man enjoys his life and dies. He again takes birth and again dies. This cycle of life goes on.

Siddhartha was very sad. He saw towards the sky and thought for a while. Then he said, “The world is caught in the net of woes and death. The pleasures of life are false. They end into sorrow. In our life youth is delightful, old age is painful and then the end is death.” Then he said to Channa, “I have seen more than enough. Now take me home.” The king also was very much worried. When the Prince had reached the palace, the king arranged three times guards at the gate. He banned everybody to see the Prince for seven days because the old man had told that all would happen in seven days.

Question 1.
What disturbed the calm of Siddhartha’s mind even among the pleasures and luxuries of the palace ? [M. Imp.]
Or

Or
Why was the Prince Siddhartha unhappy even among the pleasures and luxuries of the
palace ?
Or
Why was Siddhartha unhappy even among the pleasures and luxuries of the world?
Answer:
1. Siddhartha’s life in the palace with his wife: Prince Siddhartha was the son of king Suddhodana, the ruler of a mighty empire. The Prince passed a life of kingly pleasures and luxuries. He was living in an atmosphere of perfect bliss. He knew nothing about pains, sufferings, diseases, old age, death, etc. because he never went out of the palace. His wife Yashodhara was very beautiful and gentle. She always shared his pains and sufferings.

2. Message of Gods: But Siddhartha was a very thoughtful man. So he had no mental peace, He often used to cry, “My world! Oh world! I hear! I hear! I knew ! I come !” Once he heard a message of gods on Veena. The gods told him, “Leave your personal love and attachments. Life is but an empty show. It is full of miseries. This worldly love is for the ordinary people. You have some higher spiritual mission to fulfil in life. You have to save the entire humanity from the miseries of life. You have to be the saviour of mankind.”.

Conclusion : So Prince Siddhartha was always restless. Whenever he thought of this message, he desired to see the miseries of the world with his own eyes. He wanted to see the sufferings of mankind. Thus the message of the wind about the miseries of the world disturbed the calm of Siddhartha’s mind. The kingly pleasures were of no use for him.

Question 2.
Write in short the message which the music of the wind sang in the Prince’s ears.
Or
What does the Prince say about life and the world in the poem ‘The Light of Asia’?
Or
What message did the wind-music convey to the Prince Siddhartha ?
Answer:
1. Introduction : The Prince Siddhartha was passing a life of kingly pleasures and luxuries. He was living in an atmosphere of perfect bliss. One day the veena was placed on the window still. The wind touched its strings and it produced random wild music. The people around it heard only this music but could not understand it. It was the message of Devas (Gods) to the Prince’s ear. So only Siddhartha could understand it.

2. About Devos, this world and life: The gods said, “O Prince, we wander on the whole earth. We see pains and sufferings everywhere. Nobody is happy. Life is a struggle. It is like the wind. Man does not know from where he has come. Why has he come here and where will he go ?”

3. About worldly love : They again said, “Leave all your personal love and attachment. You have a spiritual mission to fulfil in your life. This worldly love is not for you but for the ordinary people. Love is not lasting and life is only an empty show. You are surrounded with pleasures. But these are all false and they end into sufferings.”

4. About the mission of his life: In the end, the gods again said to the Prince, “You are not an ordinary man. You have been sent into this world with a special purpose. It is your duty to save the mankind from sufferings. Now the proper time has come. So stand up and see the sufferings of mankind with your own eyes. Then find the ways to make them free from these sufferings.”

Question 3.
Why was the king worried about the prince ? What did he do to divert his mind to the life and pleasures of the palace ?
Answer:
The Prince Siddhartha was the only son of king Shuddhodana. So the king was very happy and loved him very much. He provided the Prince all pleasures and luxuries of the palace. But one day a hermit prophesied that the prince Siddhartha would be a great king or saint. He would forsake worldly life and would embrace a religious life. At this thought the king was much troubled. Whenever he recalled the prophecy of the saint, he was worried.

So the king did his best to divert the Prince’s mind to the life and pleasures of the palace. The king did not want that the Prince should leave the world. He wanted to see him a great king. So, he arranged his marriage with the most beautiful princess Yashodhara.

One day the Prince desired to go to the city. The king allowed him. He made proper arrangements and ordered his charioteer channa to go with the Prince. He also ordered that the city should be decorated. There should be no painful sight on the way of the Prince, no ailing or old man should come on his way. He did all this to keep the Prince away from the pain and suffering of the world.

But all the attempts of the king failed. The Prince wanted to go out again quite unknown to the people. He saw those sights that changed his mind. Thus the king could not shut out the fate.

Answer:
1. Effect of king’s dream: The Prince had no interest in wordly life. The king had dreamt that the Prince would renounce the world and he would become a preacher. So the king ordered that the city should be decorated so that it might look gay and happy. In doing this the aim of the king was that the Prince should be attracted towards the world.

2. Cleanliness and decoration in the city : The whole of the city was cleaned and decorated. The water carriers sprinkled water on the streets. The house-wives scattered fresh red powder before their houses. The flower garlands were hanging on the doors. There were beautiful paintings on the walls. The sun was shining and the sunlight was making the crossings very beautiful. The city looked like an enchanted city.

3. Warm welcome of the Prince in the city: There was no evil sight on the street. No blind, sick, weak or old man was allowed to walk on the road. Many people were beating drums. They were welcoming the Prince in different ways. Some people offered rice, cake, etc. to the Prince at different places. They were crying “Jai ! Jai! for our noble Prince.” Thus whole of the way was full of pleasant scenes. The Prince was very glad to see all this.

Question 6.
What did the Prince think when he saw an old man during his first visit to the city?
Answer:
1. Appearance of an old man : The Prince was very happy to see the beautiful scenes of the city during his first visit. It was the order of the king that no painful sight should come before the Prince. But all of a sudden an old man came out on the road before the Prince. His clothes were dirty and torn. His skin was dry and burnt brown by the sun. He had no flesh on his bones and no teeth in the mouth. He balanced himself on an old stick with great difficulty. He was feeling a great trouble in breathing also. He was begging alms. Although he could not speak due to cough yet he continued begging and spreading his hand. He was winking his eyes. His condition was so pitiable that it melted the heart of the Prince.

2. Channa’s statement about his condition: The Prince asked Channa about that man. Channa replied that he was an old man of 80 years of age. In his young age he was quite handsome and healthy. But the old age has made his life miserable. He is about to die now. He also advised the Prince not to look at him.

3. Condervation between the Prince and Channa: The Prince was very much disturbed again. He asked Channa, “Does it happen to all ?” Channa replied that th people who live long meet the same end. Again the Prince said, “If I and Yashodhara live long, shall we also meet the same end?” Channa said, “It is a must.” At this the Prince was so much disturbed that he asked Channa to return as he had never thought to see such things.

Question 7.
Narrate in short the conversation that took place between the Prince and Channa while the Prince was holding the sick man. [M. Imp.]
Or
What did Channa tell the Prince about the sick man ? Hearing it what were the feelings of the Prince ?
Or
What does the Prince say to Channa when he sees the sick man ?
Answer:
1. Appearance of a sick man : The Prince visited the city second time as a merchant. Channa was disguised as his clerk. They saw different types of people crying and moaning. They were passing over a river bridge when the Prince saw a very sick man. He was crying for help. The Prince took pity on him and lifted him. He put his head on his knees. The sick man felt some relief.

2. Channa’s reply to the Prince about his condition : Then the Prince asked Channa, “Why is his condition so pitiable ?” Channa’answered, “This man is suffering from any fatal disease. His blood is hot. His heart is not beating properly. His strength has gone. He will die soon. Then the disease would go and attack some other person.” He advised the Prince also not to hold him lest the disease should strike him.

3. Old age and death are inevitable : Then the Prince asked if other people also suffered like that. Channa answered, “The disease comes to all in one form or the other.” In reply to various questions of the Prince, Channa told him that the diseases come secretly and suddenly. All men live in fear and none can say that he would wake up as he had slept. Channa told him that the men who live long enough grow old and in the end they die.

Question 8.
“Is this the end which comes to all who live ?” who says it and what was the reply ?
Answer:
Prince Siddhartha said these words when he saw the dead body burning on the pyre. In a very short time it was burnt to ashes. This scene moved the Prince deeply. He asked Channa if that was the fate of every living being. Channa told him that this is the fate of every man. None is immortal in the world.

He further told the Prince that the flesh of a dead body is useless. Even the hungry crows do not eat it. The life of a man is very short. He lives, eats, drinks, laughs, loves and likes life well. Then death comes to him in any form and makes him dead. After death man feels nothing. He has no sense of smell, taste, hearing, sight or touch. His near and dear ones cry for him but there is no reply. Even his dearest ones hate to touch his dead body. It becomes impious for everybody. So this is the fate of every human being.

Hearing this, the eyes of Siddhartha were full of tears. He saw towards the sky and thought for a while. Then he said, “The world is caught in the net of woes and death. The pleasures of life are false. They end into sorrow. In our life youth is delightful, old age is painful and then the end is death.” Then he said to Channa, “I have seen more than enough. Now take me home.”

[M. Imp.]
Answer:
One night king Shuddhodana saw very awful visions in his dream which made him very upset. He lost all peace of mind. The same night the Prince Siddhartha was restless. He was lost in thinking about the old age and its sufferings. The seven visions dreamt by king Shuddhodana are given below :

  1.  He saw a beautiful broad flag. The sun was shining on it. It was making it bright. A strong wind tore it. It threw the flag into dust. A group of shadowy persons came and took away the flag. They went towards the east.
  2.  Then the king saw ten huge elephants. They had long white tusks. When they walked, the earth moved. The Prince was sitting on the leading elephant. They came on the southern road.

  4.  Then he saw a moving wheel. It was bright gold. There were jewels on its spokes. Something was written on tyres. It produced sweet music.
  5.  Then he saw a drum. It was placed between the city and hills. The Prince was beating it with an iron rod. It produced loud sound like thunder.
  6.  Then he saw a tower reaching the clouds. The Prince stood on its top. He was scattering jewels in every direction. The people from the whole world came to collect them.
  7.  Lastly the king saw six men weeping. They had closed their mouths with their hands. They looked very sad.

Question 10.
Write in your own words the interpretation of the seven visions as given by the
hermit. [M. Imp.]
Or
Who interpreted the seven visions of king Suddhodana ? How did he interpret them?
Or
What was the effect of the hermit’s prediction about the future of the Prince on the king of Kapilvastu ?
Or
What did the old man in robes of deer skin tell the king about his seven fears?
Answer:
The dream was very fearful. So the king was much worried. Nobody in his kingdom could tell him the meaning of the visions. Then an unknown old man came to the king. He was clad in robes of deer skin. He told him the clear meanings of the seven visions.
First vision of flag means that the old faith will change and new faiths will take their place.

The second vision of ten elephants means that the Prince would gain ten gifts of * wisdom. He will shake the world. The four horses of the third vision signify four fearless virtues. These virtues will help the Prince to gain knowledge. This knowledge will make the Prince wise and happy. The wheel of the fourth vision was the wheel of perfect law. The Prince would turn this wheel. Thus he would save the humanity from sorrow.

The stormy sound of the drum in fifth vision means that the Prince would teach his principles in a loud voice.

The tower of the sixth vision means that his principles will grow like the tower. The Prince would scatter the treasure of the perfect law. The people of the world would accept them and follow them.

Lastly there were six men. The Prince would show them the follies of man’s life and would give them knowledge. Thus these six disciples of the Prince will become the teachers. They will preach to the man.

In the end the hermit told the king that all of it would happen in seven days and nights. The Prince would be greater than a king. He would be a great hermit.

Answer:
At the end of his second visit, the Prince saw some people carrying a dead body on a bier. They were saying ‘Ram, Ram, O Ram.’ They put it on a heap of wood and burnt it to ashes.

In a very short time all was burnt to ashes. This scene moved the Prince deeply. He asked Channa about it. Channa told him that this is the fate of every man. Every man has to meet this fate again and again.

Question 15.
“It is enough, my eyes have seen enough.” who says this and why?
Or
“It is enough, my eyes have seen enough”. What is the significance of this statement ?
Answer:
1. Who says this? Its significance: “It is enough, my eyes have seen enough” is spoken by the Prince Siddhartha at the end of his second visit to the city. The sentence is very significant because it points out how a change in the outlook of the Prince took place. This sentence shows the mental agony of the Prince. He had realized everything and did not want to see anything more.

2. Effect of different sights during his visits : The Prince Siddhartha was living in the pleasures and luxuries of the palace. But he keenly desired to see the outside world. During his first visit he saw a very old man. He was so much pained to see him that he at once returned home. During his second visit he saw a man suffering from an infectious disease. Then he saw a dead body and its funeral. So these were the most pitiable and miserable conditions of man’s life.

3. Changes in his outlook of life : He realized that all the pleasures of life end into miseries. Death is the end of our life. He came to know that all men-born, live, suffer row old and die. His early life was full of comforts, ease and joy. But now he knew the reality of life. Now for him life was false, full of sorrow and despair. His ideas about life changed. He was unable to see anything more. So he asked his charioteer, Channa, to return home.

Our interest from the beginning up to the end continues.

5. Lesson which we learn : From the poem we learn that all the pleasures of life are vain and temporary. They end into misery. We should love all the mankind. These are the reasons why I like this poem The Light of Asia’.

Question 19.
Elucidate the character of Yashodhara and Shuddhodana.
Answer:
Character of Yashodhara : Yashodhara is the wife of Prince Siddhartha. She is young and beautiful. She is very tender-hearted. We see her in this poem only in the beginning. This is the reason that much about her character is not known.

She is a faithful wife. She loves her husband most. She becomes restless to see her husband worrying and thinking. She makes him sleep in her lap and fans him. She gives him as much comfort as she can. So she is an ideal Hindu lady.

Character of Shuddhodana : Shuddhodana is the king of Kapilvastu. He has only one son named Siddhartha. The king is a very important character of this poem.

The king dreamt seven visions. So he was very much afraid. He wanted to know the meaning of these visions. An old man told him the true meaning of the dream. The king was very much worried. So this thing shows that the king was superstitious.” The king is a loving father. He cannot bear that his only son should renounce home and become a hermit. So he provides all the comforts and luxuries to the Prince. He .. does not want that the Prince should know about the worldly pains. So he arranges guards at the gate.

But the king is very liberal also. When the Prince desired to visit the city, he agreed. But he announced that no evil sight should come on his way.

The king had a great respect for the hermits and his ministers. When the old hermit told him the meaning of his dream, he sent him gifts. From time to time he consults his ministers also.

Question 20.
what was the effect of Chitra’s story on the mind of the Prince ?
Or
Who is Chitra ? Narrate in short the conversation that took place between the Prince and Chitra.
Or
Describe Prince Siddhartha’s restlessness as depicted in his conversation with Yashodhara and Chitra in the court scene.
Answer:
One evening Prince Siddhartha was sitting with his courtiers and his wife Yashodhara. Chitra was a maid servant. She was singing a sweet song. All of a sudden she stopped and began to tell them a story of olden days. This story was about love, a magic horse and wonderful countries. She told that the pale people lived there. When it was night, the sun sank into the sea.

Hearing this story, the Prince was reminded of the song of Veena. The Prince was restless. He sighed and asked Yashodhara many questions. Some of those important questions are given below:

  1.  Is the world so wide?
  2.  Is there a country where the sun is seen sinking into the sea ?
  3.  Are there many unknown and sad people whom we can help ?
  4.  Who welcomes, the first beam of the sun at the edge of the world ?
  5.  How are the people at another edge of sky where the sun sinks into the sea ?

Thus the Prince desired to see the people at both of these edges, in the East as well as in the West. He requested Chitra to tell him where the magic horse was tied. He wanted to ride on it to see the whole world. Besides this so many other ideas about the world struck his mind. He had an earnest desire to see things outside the palace.

Question 21.
Whatlesson doyou get from the story The LightofAsia’? .
Answer:
“The Light of Asia’ describes the story of Buddha’s birth, his early experiences of life, his renunciation and his teachings. From what Lord Buddha observed and taught, we learn the following lessons :

We should accept the realities of life as they are. Life is not what we want it to be. It is full of sufferings, diseases and its end is death.

We should not forget that old age comes to everybody and makes us weak. With no power left to work, one may have even to beg for his bread.

We should also accept that disease takes everybody in its fold. It takes away joy and health from us. People leave the sick to die. We should also accept that the end of life is death.

The man takes birth, enjoys his life and dies. He again takes birth and again dies. This cycle of life goes on.

The gist of life is that the world is caught in the net of woes and death. The pleasures of life are false. They end in sorrow. In our life youth is delightful, old age is painful and the end is death.

[The Light of Asia’

Question 22.
Why was king Suddhodana not in favour of permitting the Prince move out in the city without prior preparation ? What preparations did he ensure before permitting the Prince to visit the city ?
Answer:
King Suddhodana was the ruler of Kapilvastu. Prince Siddhartha was his only son. He was brought up with all the luxuries which could be bought by money. He wanted to keep Prince away from pains and sufferings of the world. At the time of Prince’s birth great pandits foretold, “The fortune of my Lord, the Prince, is more than Kingdom.”

At the growing up the Prince’s strange behaviour made the king more worried to him. Though the Prince loved his wife Yashodhara, he would startle in sleep and utter strange words. King dreamt seven visions that irritated him badly and then the hermit described the meaning of these seven visions.

Due to all the above incidents King feared very much about the future of the Prince. So he was not in favour of permitting the Prince to move out the city.

Seeing the strong desire of the Prince to visit the city, king ordered to decorate the city. He ordered that weak, old and sick persons should not come before the Prince.
