1. My Days among the Dead are past;
Around me I behold,
Where’er these casual eyes are cast,
The mighty minds of old :
My never-failing friends are they,
With whom I converse day by day.

behold = देखता हूँ see; casual eyes are cast = संयोग से दृष्टि पड़ती है by chance I look at; mighty minds of old = पुराने समय के महान् विचारक great thinkers of old time; never failing = सच्चे true; converse = बातचीत करता हूँ talk.]

भावार्थ- विद्वान् व्यक्ति कहता है कि उसका सारा जीवन उन लेखकों की पुस्तकें पढ़ने में व्यतीत हुआ है। जो मर गए हैं। जहाँ कहीं भी उसकी दृष्टि पड़ती है वहीं अपने चारों ओर वह उन लेखकों की पुस्तकें पाता है। जिनके मस्तिष्क बहुत महान् थे और जिन्होंने उत्तम कोटि की पुस्तकें लिखी हैं। विद्वान् व्यक्ति कहता है कि मृत लेखक मेरे सच्चे मित्र हैं और मैं प्रतिदिन उनसे बातचीत करता हूँ अर्थात् विद्वान् व्यक्ति उन महान् लेखकों से उनकी महान् पुस्तकों के माध्यम से अपने विचारों का आदान-प्रदान करता है।

2. With them I take delight in weal
And seek relief in woe;
And while I understand and feel
How much to them I owe,
My cheeks have often been bedew’d
With tears of thoughtful gratitude.

भावार्थ- विद्वान् कहता है कि इन पुस्तकों को पढ़कर समृद्धि एवं सम्पन्नता में उसे आनन्द प्राप्त होता है और दु:ख में उनसे उसे सान्त्वना मिलती है (इसलिए वे मेरी मित्र हैं)। विद्वान् व्यक्ति कहता है कि जब मैं इस बात पर विचार करता हूँ, तब मुझे अनुभव होता है कि मैं उनका कितना ऋणी हूँ। कृतज्ञता के ऐसे विचार मेरे मन में आते हैं तब मेरे आँसू बहने लगते हैं और मेरे गाल आँसुओं से भीग जाते हैं।

I live in long-past years,
Their virtues love, their faults condemn,
Partake their hopes and fears,
And from their lessons seek and find

भावार्थ- इस पद्यांश में विद्वान् व्यक्ति उन लोगों का वर्णन करता है जो उसे पुस्तकें पढ़ने से प्राप्त होते हैं। जब वह मृत लेखकों की पुस्तकें पढ़ता है तब उसके विचार भी उन्हीं जैसे हो जाते हैं और वह ऐसा अनुभव करता है मानो उनके जीवन-काल के दिनों में उन्हीं के साथ रह रहा है अर्थात् उसे भूतकाल के विषय में भी पूर्ण ज्ञान प्राप्त हो जाता है। विद्वान् व्यक्ति उनके गुणों से प्यार करता है और उन्हें अपनाता है तथा उनके दोषों की ओर ध्यान नहीं देता। वह उनकी आशाओं तथा भय में हिस्सा बँटाता है। अत: विद्वान् व्यक्ति बड़ी विनम्रता से उनके बुद्धिमानी से भरे पाठों से शिक्षा प्राप्त करता है।)

4. My hopes are with the Dead; anon
My place with them will be,
And I with them shall travel on
Through all Futurity;
Yet leaving here a name, I trust,
That will not perish in the dust.               [Imp.]

भावार्थ- विद्वान् व्यक्ति कहता है कि मेरी आकांक्षाएँ भी मृत लेखकों के समान ही हैं और शीघ्र ही मेरा स्थान भी उनके साथ ही हो जाएगा अर्थात् मैं शीघ्र ही मर जाऊँगा और अनन्त भविष्य में मैं भी उन्हीं के साथ यात्रा करूंगा। संसार के सभी स्थानों पर उसकी पुस्तकें भी इन लेखकों के समान ही पढ़ी जाएँगी। वह आशा करता है कि उसकी मृत्यु के पश्चात् लोग उसे भी नहीं भूलेंगे और उसका नाम भी अमर हो जाएगा।
