Central Idea
In this poem the poet Walt Whitman describes his grief over the death of President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln fought the American civil war successfully. He eradicated slavery. But he was assassinated in a theatre by a terrorist. The people are very anxious to offer him the garlands of flowers as a sign of their love and respect for him. But he is lying dead. So the poet says, “Let the people rejoice. I will alone mourn the death of Captain.”

Fallen cold and dead.

Context: This poem is an elegy on the death of Lincoln. He fought the American civil war sucessfully and eradicated slavery. But he was assassinated in a theatre by a terrorist.

Explanation : In this stanza the poet describes the assassination of Abraham and expresses his grief over his death. The poet loves him dearly so he addresses him by the word ‘heart’ three times. He sees the drops of red blood flowing from his body. Lincoln is lying on the uppermost part of the ship. He is lifeless and has gone to heavenly abode.

Comments : The poet has glorified this stanza by the use of Apostrophe figure of speech.

3. 0 Captain ! My Captain ! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up for you the flag is flung-for you the bugle trills
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths-for you the shores crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;

[ Word-meanings : flung = फहराया गया unfurled; trills = बज रहा है sounding; bouquets = गुलदस्ता bunch of flowers; ribboned wreath = फूलों के हार flower garland; crowding = सम्मान दिखाने आये हुए लोगों से भरा हुआ overcrowded with persons who have come to honour you; swaying mass = इधर-उधर घूमती हुई लोगों की भीड़ the crowd of the people moving here and there. ]

Context : Abraham Lincoln was the famous President of America. He was a noble man. He led his army to victory. So the people were eager to welcome him.

Explanation : The poet asks the President (Captain) to rise up from the sleep and see how eager the people are to welcome him. The bells are ringing for him and the flag of victory is flying high in the air. To make the victory the bugle is being rounded. Flowers and garlands are there to give him a cheering reception. The people have gathered in large number to greet him.

4. Here, Captain ! dear Father !
This arm beneath your head !
It is some dream that on the deck
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

[ Word-meanings : beneath = नीचे under. ]

Context: The poet has been asking the President (Captain), Abraham Lincoln to rise up from his sleep and receive the warm welcome from the masses who have gathered to greet him.

Explanation : When there is no response to the poet’s request from the President, the poet becomes suspicious. Addressing the President as dear father, he puts his own arm beneath his head. He supports him but he realises that the President is unbelievably dead. It seems that he is lying dead and cold.

5. My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;

[ Word-meanings: pulse = नाड़ी; will = इच्छा-शक्ति desire to act; anchor’d = लंगर डाले हुए है is resting at the end of voyage; object = उद्देश्य अर्थात् दासता का अन्त abolition of slavery.]

Context : When the President (Captain) Abraham Lincoln does not respond to the poet’s request he becomes suspicious about the President’s well-being.

Explanation : The poet becomes sad when he finds that his Captain, the President Abraham Lincoln, does not answer and his lips are pale and motionless. Then the poet finds that the captain does not feel his arm and his pulse is missing. Now the poet becomes certain that the captain is dead. However, the poet realises that the captain has brought the ship safe and sound to the shore from a journey full of perils. He has successfully thwarted away the danger before the country and secured victory for the people of his country.

6. Exult, O shores ! and ring, O bells !
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

[Word-meanings: exult = खूब आनन्द मनाओ be cheerful; mournful tread = दुःख भरे पग बढ़ाता हुआ walking with sorrow.]

Context: This elegy is on the death of President Lincoln. When the President did not answer any of the questions asked by the poet, he became sure that the President was dead.

Explanation : In this stanza the poet addresses the people standing on the bank. He advises them to be happy and gay and make merry. He allows them to ring the bells of the church with joy. But he will mourn the death of his President who is lying dead on the deck. Thus the poet is very much grieved on the death of Lincoln and that is why he has decided to do nothing but mourn.
